Minnesota High School Hockey
Life In Duluth
Hearts In Hawaii blog
After an absence of many years, this site is back! This site will serve as an archival repository for as much statistical information as I can find on Duluth East Boys' hockey. More features will be added as the site is developed, within the constraints of the time I have available for this project. If you see something missing which you'd like to add, please feel free to send me an email using the link found on the left. Thanks!
I'm mulling over the idea of possibly setting up a Message Board devoted to East hockey. Whether it would be more trouble to maintain than it would be worth is the question I'm pondering at this time. A decision will be made prior to the start of the 2017-18 season. At this point, I'm "on the fence" regarding this; I don't know how useful a feature such as this can be in the Twitter age.
2017-18 Season's End
We were hoping, and East gave themselves a chance with a thrilling 4-2 win over Edina in the Class AA semifinals, but they came up on the short end of a 5-2 result on Saturday night against Minnetonka in the State Championship game. To the team and coaching staff--your fans appreciate and applaud you on yet another outstanding season!
MVP; I used to award this (and a couple other awards) on this website in the past, so I thought I'd reincarnate the award. Based on VIG (Victory Important Goals), the award goes to Garrett Worth, senior forward! His 47 goals were the most by a Greyhound since Dave Spehar netted 54 goals in the 1995-96 season. Quite the accomplishment for Garrett and his linemates on the WMD line of Ryder Donovan and Ian Mageau. This line accounted for 80 goals and 108 assists this season, the most since the Randolph-Toninato-Olson line in 2011-12.
Good luck to the graduating seniors, and we'll see everyone back here next season!
Victory Important Goals--What Is It?
This statistical measurement was borrowed from sabermatician Bill James Victory Important RBI, used to measure how valuable a player's RBI's were when compared to other players' output. The formula is very easy to calculate, and is based on the following:
1. No VIG are awarded to players if you lose or tie a game
2. If you win, the number of goals which were needed to win (example, the opponent scores two goals, so three are needed to win), and then this number is divided by the total goals a team scored that game. Each goal scored is awarded that fracition. For example, if you won 5-3, each goal scored is worth 0.8 goals ((3+1)/5)
3. The goal values are then totaled for each player over the season

Archives: Right now, the only archives I have are the old Hound Zone pages which were featured on the old site from 1997-2001. It serves as a journal of what was happening with the team during those years, starting with their 1997-98 State Championship season.
Other features will be developed as time permits. A history of East Hockey is currently in the works.
